Applying for State Examination and Bachelor’s programmes

At the University of Freiburg, you can choose between State Examination programmes (human medicine, pharmacy, law, and dentistry), and Bachelor’s programmes: Bachelor of Arts (B.A.), Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.), and the Polyvalent dual-major Bachelor’s degree (with teaching degree option). All of these count as undergraduate programmes, as do the Magister Theologiae (Mag. Theol.) and the Ecclesiastical Examination.

State Examination

The State Examination is a final examination administered by the state and required for certain professions, such as doctors, lawyers, pharmacists, and future teachers. Unlike Bachelor’s and Master’s examinations, the State Examination is conducted directly by state authorities such as the State Examination Office (Landesprüfungsamt).

Bachelor

A Bachelor’s degree is the first academic qualification in the two-tier Bachelor–Master system. Usually obtained after three to four years of study, a Bachelor’s degree represents both an initial academic qualification and a professional qualification.

The application process

Once you have chosen your degree programme, you can start your application via the University of Freiburg’s online application portal, regardless of your nationality or chosen degree programme:

If you have applied for a programme with open admission, you will be admitted once you have submitted your application via the online portal. You will then be forwarded to the online enrolment form. You will not receive a separate letter of admission.

However, if you have applied for a programme with restricted admission or special admission requirements, you will receive an offer and an official letter of admission via the online portal. You can find and download this letter in the inbox of your application account.
