The Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) BA/BSc is a 4-year, English-taught study program hosted at University College Freiburg (UCF). It combines a shared foundation in the Core, flexibility and breadth in the Electives with academic depth in the Major that you choose after your first year of studies:

1. Culture and History
2. Governance
3. Life Sciences
4. Environmental and Sustainability Sciences

The Freiburg LAS Program is rooted in the student-centered Liberal Education tradition that emphasizes critical thinking, intellectual discovery, and personal development. UCF fosters an engaging interdisciplinary learning community with an international orientation including study abroad opportunities. We prepare students to tackle complex challenges and make meaningful contributions in an interconnected world. LAS graduates’ career opportunities and paths reflect the breadth of the Program. 80% of our graduates enter disciplinary or interdisciplinary Master’s programmes, in Germany and abroad. Work fields include international and governmental institutions, the private sector, cultural and social organizations, media, the knowledge-based sector, and much more.

Admission

Language requirements: Englisch B2

First semester: Restricted admission (60 places)
Selection procedure
Knowledge of the English language at least level B2 of the CEFR; result of the University entrance qualification, evaluation of the motivation letter (at least 4.0) and evaluation of an essay (at least 4.0).

Germans and EU citizens: 90% of study spaces are granted in a selection procedure and 10% after a waiting period.
Non-EU citizens (without German school-leaving certificate): do not take part in this selection procedure. Study spaces are granted according to a quota of 20% of the available spaces.

Remark: Please check again at the beginning of the application period to make sure that the admission requirements for this degree program have not changed in the meantime.

Academic content

Liberal Arts and Sciences is a specific approach to Bachelor level education and an alternative to disciplinary study. Combining academic breadth and depth with student choice, LAS encourages intellectual discovery and personal development in an international learning community.

LAS offers interdisciplinary training that allows for individual emphases:

The Core (56 ECTS) encompasses basic and advanced academic skills, reflections on knowledge and science, and a curriculum on Responsibility and Leadership.

In the Electives (64 ECTS), students can choose from a variety of options and courses as well as undertake study projects of their own.

The Major (102 ECTS + 16 ECTS Multidisciplinarity) constitutes the students’ training in a specific academic field. LAS offers four Majors: (1) Environmental and Sustainability Sciences, (2) Life Sciences, (3) Governance, (4) Culture and History.

While LAS does not prepare you for a specific trajectory or career, it is a structured opportunity to develop and focus your interests and competencies for a broad range of professional fields.

About 80% of our graduates pursue further academic training in interdisciplinary as well as specialized Master’s programs in a broad range of academic fields.

LAS graduates are prepared for careers in international environments that demand fast and efficient adaptation to varying and complex challenges. Think tanks, academia, international organizations, politics and administration, media, as well as international firms are future employers.

Results of the last selection processes

The tables with the results of the last selection processes allow you to see the assigned grade/number of points in the selection process which would have sufficed and what the waiting period would have been to secure admission. The assigned grade/number of points is based by subject on the average grade or weighted grades achieved in the German higher education entrance qualification, on test results and/or outcome of the selection interview, and also on professional or practical experience in the respective subject.

Preselection: assigned note/number of points = average grade of the Abitur in combination with the essay

Lottery procedure

Applicants who are not nationals of EU member states or of signatory states to the Agreement on the European Economic Area or who are not equivalent to Germans pursuant to Section 1 (2) No. 2-3 HZVO (Baden-Württemberg University Admission Regulations) and/or do not hold a German higher education entrance qualification may not take part in the lottery procedure.

Lottery procedures are conducted in subjects with restricted admission where places are still available. Should places still be available after the final waiting list procedure, these are allocated in a lottery procedure. Application for participation in the lottery procedure must be made online and separately for each degree programme to which admission is sought. The application period for the winter semester is from 1 September to 30 September and for the summer semester from 1 March to 31 March. Applications received earlier or later than stipulated will not be considered.

The online application portal for the lottery procedure is only open during the application period.
