The Master's programme in Pharmaceutical Sciences delves deeper into research-related aspects and is particularly aimed at graduates who are enthusiastic about scientific issues and laboratory work. Those aspiring to a career in research will find the ideal conditions for specialisation here, with a choice of two profile lines.
The first two semesters focus on consolidating the basics, including courses in pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutical biology, pharmaceutical technology, bioinformatics, biochemistry and pharmacology. Students also learn various working methods, analysis and problem-solving strategies, and engage in literature research.
Specialisation takes place in the third semester, with a choice between the profile lines „Drug Discovery and Delivery“ and „Regulatory Affairs and Drug Development“.
The profil line „Drug Discovery and Delivery“ provides in-depth knowledge of the development, mode of action and targeted administration of drugs. It combines modern drug research with pharmaceutical technology and biomedical applications. The focus is on the discovery of new active substances, the optimisation of formulations and innovative approaches to targeted drug delivery. Students learn a wide range of experimental and analytical methods – from molecular assays to modern analytical techniques. Two research-oriented internships, which can also be completed in cooperation with international partner universities or industrial companies, are central components of the profile line. In addition, students acquire skills in scientific analysis, presentation and critical evaluation of results.
The profile line „Regulatory Affairs and Drug Development“ focuses on the entire process of drug development, from research to approval and market readiness. It combines scientific fundamentals with legal, ethical and communicative aspects of pharmaceutical practice. The focus is on the regulatory and organisational requirements of drug development, questions of patent law and quality management, and ethical and sustainable perspectives in biomedical research. In addition, students acquire skills in media relations and scientific communication. Close cooperation with experts from industry ensures a strong practical focus: guest lectures, interdisciplinary courses and the possibility of writing master's theses in companies provide direct insight into everyday working life in the fields of research, regulation and marketing of drugs.
Requirements
The Master's programme in Pharmaceutical Sciences is particularly interesting for students who do not necessarily want to work in a pharmacy after graduation, but instead are considering a career as a Regulatory Affairs Manager, for example, and are interested in the development and approval or the modes of action of medicines.
Students can apply for the Master's programme with the following degrees:
- B.Sc. in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biology, Biotechnology or Chemistry
- Second State Examination in Pharmacy
Pharmacists with a Second State Examination can complete the Master's degree in just two semesters, as they are exempt from the first two semesters of the programme.
Career perspectives
The programme opens up many career fields for students, as they are introduced to everyday working life, qualifications and practical experience during their studies. Successful completion of the programme qualifies graduates for a career in scientific research (and thus for a doctorate) as well as for specialisation in the pharmaceutical industry; however, it does not lead to licensure as a pharmacist.
The programme focuses mainly on drug research and the process of bringing drugs to market. However, graduates also have career opportunities in research institutes, hospitals, public administration and in areas such as public relations, science journalism and patent law.
