Altertumswissenschaften (Ancient Civilization Studies)

Master of Arts (M.A.)

The M.A. in Ancient Civilisation Studies deepens the study of ancient cultures through archaeology, history, and philology, integrating texts, languages, and material evidence. The research-oriented programme allows specialisation with a regional focus from the Ancient Near East to Graeco-Roman antiquity and prehistoric Europe. Students work with inscriptions, papyri, coins, and artefacts, combining philological, historical, and archaeological approaches. An optional binational EUCOR track adds further perspectives. Graduates develop independent research skills, analytical and critical judgement, and the ability to interpret complex cultural contexts. Advanced language skills and academic practice prepare them for doctoral study, research, and careers in culture, education, museums, and research management.
