Earth Sciences

Master of Science (M.Sc.)

The 4-semester Master's in Earth Sciences offers in-depth scientific training to gain a comparative understanding of the physical and chemical processes, the development and the general properties of the Earth and planets to be able to respond better to challenges such as climate change or natural disasters. The English-taught, internationally oriented Master offers two majors: Environmental Earth Science and Earth and Planetary Science. The Environmental Earth Science specialisation focuses on the systems science principles of geosciences and environmental sciences and their practical application The subject of the Earth and Planetary Science major is the study of the planet Earth and other celestial bodies. Students learn basic processes and methods that are the indispensable tools of both earth scientists and planetologists. These include advanced remote sensing, chemical-mineralogical rock and mineral analysis, and quantitative modelling based on geophysical data. Enabling students to apply concepts of geoscience to the environmental challenges of the 21st century is the overarching objective. The programme qualifies students for an academic career in the field of science and research as well as professional careers, particularly at Geological Surveys, Geological companies, Space Agencies, and the private industry sector (e.g.: Raw materials industry, civil engineering companies).
