Chair of Forest Growth and Dendroecology

Abkürzung der Fakultät für Umwelt und Natürliche Ressourcen "unr" in der Farbe sand auf grünem, kreisförmigen Hintergrund

The chair’s work focuses on forest growth, the sustainable management of forest resources and the development of methods for quantitatively assessing, analysing and predicting tree growth. The chair investigates various aspects of forest dynamics, including the impact of global change on forest ecosystems and the use of forests as carbon stores and natural resources. Research and teaching at the chair are closely intertwined and provide students with a solid education in these important areas.

Future Forests

The multidisciplinary Future Forests initiative, a cluster initiative within the framework of the Excellence Strategy of the University of Freiburg, has set itself the goal of researching forests as socio-ecological systems and developing sustainable transformation strategies. The project is motivated by the ecosystem services provided by forests, whose provision is threatened by climate change. At the same time, human demands of nature are changing due to societal changes. As part of the project, the forest will therefore be analysed as complex socio-ecological system. The aim of the researchers is to analyse forests and develop transformation solutions to ultimately design adaptable forest systems. Prof. Dr. Thomas Seifert from the Chair of Forest Growth and Dendroecology is involved as PI (Principal Investigator) in projects A3 and C3.
