Inhalte

Content
Scientists have to be able to present their arguments in a precise and convincing way. However, when writing their papers, many scientists rely on intuition rather than on concrete methods. This course provides participants with all the techniques they need to know in order to state their arguments precisely, correctly and convincingly. The course starts with the basic concepts of reasoning and logic: validity and soundness of arguments, deductive and inductive reasoning, common types of logical inferences. From these basics, we derive useful techniques for argumentation in scientific texts. Participants get the chance to apply the acquired skills directly to their own work.
What can you expect?
- basic concepts of logic and argumentation theory
- the logical structure of scientific texts
- writing a good introduction
- writing style
Objectives
The participants…
- state their arguments in a precise and logically coherent way
- quickly identify strengths and weaknesses in arguments &
- write accessible texts.
Methods
The methods are interactive throughout. The contents are demonstrated using examples from participants’ texts. The course includes extensive exercises that aim at the application of the acquired skills to the participants’ work.

Doctoral candidates who want to learn how to use LaTeX for writing academic texts, including but not limited to their doctoral thesis.
Course Description
We‘ve all been there….you are working late into the night trying to finish a paper, but the figures won‘t go where you want them to and the references for your bibliography are getting mixed up….and the footnotes…don‘t even get me started! Thanks, Microsoft Word!
But what if there was another way? Maybe there is: LaTeX.
So what is LaTeX and why should you use it to write your doctoral thesis?
LaTeX is a document preparation typesetting system that uses plain text input in order to create an attractive end product. This software has been in use in academia for decades and improvements are continuously made. It is especially useful for formatting large documents such as books, scientific articles or an academic thesis. LaTeX makes it easy to include references, figures with captions, nice looking tables and equations, and can save you some stress when writing your thesis in addition to making your thesis stand out for its fabulous formatting!
Objectives
By the end of the workshop, you will:
- Have a clearer sense of how to use LaTeX and for what purposes
- Get comfortable with the LaTeX programming environment
- Learn how to include figures, references, equations, cross-references, table of contents, title pages, etc.
- Be able to do basic troubleshooting for LaTeX documents
- Create a plan of action to organize your written thesis with LaTeX
Methods
In this course, we will be using Overleaf, a free web-based LaTeX editor to demonstrate the functionality of LaTeX and in the end we will create a personalized template that you can use for your thesis! The course will be taught in English, but if you are writing in German, this is not a problem. The same principles apply and questions can be asked in German or English. Please bring your laptop as it will be necessary for you to follow along with the course.

Content
To foster central tenets of good research like risk taking, courage, a spirit of innovation, and learning from mistakes, it pays off to make research culture more failure-friendly. It is a community effort to help (especially younger) researchers handle career setbacks, and make sure they receive proper recognition for their achievements and their efforts on the path to these achievements.
This interactive webinar explores the “why” and the “how” of celebrating failures and successes in the everyday life of a researcher. Through short lectures and group work, the participants work out what goes right and what goes wrong when you are in this profession, what celebrating failure can look like and what benefits it might have, what resources each of us has to handle our next „career fiasco“ with care, and how to mark small everyday achievements and big milestones alike.

Kommentar

Description
This four-day course (2 x 2 days) covers the basics of professional university teaching. The participants will improve their methodological knowledge about the teaching – learning interaction and learn how to effectively influence this setting. The objective is to reach a level of learner centered teaching that will lead to a deep-level learning approach on the side of the students. Participants will be required to reflect on their own teaching experiences and their role as university teachers.
Content
- Principles and Aspects of teaching and learning
- Learner centered teaching and Constructive Alignment
- Teaching methods fostering deep-level learning
- Challenges and Diversity in teaching
- Assessment
- Feedback and Evaluation
Methods
With the help of experience-oriented methods (e.g. teaching simulations), we will analyze previous actions in teaching situations. The course also offers the opportunity to develop and try out new methods and approaches. The aim of the course is to support participants in evaluating their own teaching experiences on the basis of theoretical concepts and developing their own teaching approaches. In addition to teaching simulations, we will also use group work as well as self- and group reflection.
Prerequisites
Prerequisite for participation is the teaching of a course at the University of Freiburg in the summer semester 2026.
Attendance is also required on all four days of the workshop – only then can you receive a participation certificate. You can cancel your registration in writing up to 14 calendar days before the start of the event. If you cancel later or do not attend, the full fee will be charged. Please understand that this rule applies regardless of the reason for cancellation.
Other Information
There is a cost contribution of €100 for participation in this event. This can be reimbursed by GraCe upon request after successful participation (proven by a certificate of participation).
