Aljaž Godec (born in Maribor, Slovenia) obtained his doctorate in 2012 from the University of Ljubljana. After moving to Germany, he was an postdoctoral researcher in the the group of Prof. Ralf Metzler at the Institute of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Potsdam with an Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellowship. In 2017 he was awarded an Emmy Noether independent junior research group by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and later also a Heisenberg professorship in 2023. Until 2025, his research group Mathematical bioPhysics was hosted by Prof. Helmut Grubmüller at the Max Planck Institute for Multidisciplinary Natural Sciences (formerly Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry) in Göttingen. In 2026 he has been appointed a full W3 professorship for Theoretical Physics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Freiburg.

His research group Mathematical Physics and Stochastic Dynamics focuses on the statistical and mathematical physics of out-of-equilibrium systems, in particular on stochastic thermodynamics and emergent phenomena in soft matter and biophysics.
