Financing your studies

Before applying for a place at university, you should carefully consider how you will finance your studies. In addition to tuition fees for international applicants from non-EU/EEA countries, there are additional costs for rent, living expenses and learning materials. Therefore, find out about the various options for financing your studies at an early stage. Careful financial planning is the basis for a successful course of study.

How do I apply?

As an international student at the University of Freiburg, you have the option of either studying full-time (degree seekers) or for just one or two semesters (short-term study).

If you would like to obtain a state examination, bachelor’s or master’s degree at the University of Freiburg and have questions about your application, admission requirements (e.g. university entrance qualification) or the application process itself, then the Application and Admission Team at the Service Center Studium is the right point of contact for you.

How do I enrol?

Semester fees and tuition

In order to enrol or re-enrol in a state examination, Bachelor’s or Master’s programme at the University of Freiburg, you must pay the semester fee and, if applicable, the tuition fee for international students (from non-EU/EEA countries without a German university entrance qualification) each semester.

The Studierendenwerk Freiburg (SWFR) offers, among other things, places in halls of residence or helps students find suitable accommodation. It also provides various advisory services, for example in the areas of finance and social affairs. It also supports students’ cultural activities and offers many opportunities for intercultural encounters.

The International Club is a forum for students from all over the world. Here they can make contacts and get to know other cultures.

In the Intercultural Mentoring Programme (ICM), international first-year students (mentees) are paired with experienced students from all departments (mentors) according to their fields of study.

The Additional Programme for International Students (APIS) offers opportunities for a smooth transition into university life, personal development and exchanges with other students.
