Academic content
The consecutive degree programme Master of Science Molecular Medicine provides fundamental knowledge in clinical-theoretical subjects, in addition to profound knowledge of clinical research in internal medicine and neurology. This is supplemented by a module on molecular medicine and functional biochemistry as well as a clinical elective, a biomedical elective, and an experimental elective. The two-year programme concludes with the research for the master thesis project and its defence.
The programme’s focus is in particular on introducing the students to ongoing research by integrating several research internships This allows students to set an individual focus throughout their studies and provides an in-depth insight into the cutting-edge biomedical research conducted at the University of Freiburg. As Molecular Medicine is a natural science the Faculty of Biology in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine offers the opportunity to pursue a doctorate (Dr. rer. nat.) in the field of Molecular Medicine. The doctorate is awarded by the Faculty of Biology.
The two-year programme M.Sc. Molecular Medicine is expiring. The last application period is from 15 December 2025 to 15 January 2026. From the winter semester of 2026 the programme will be replaced by the one-year M.Sc. Molecular Medicine, which is taught in English.

Satzung über ergänzende Regelungen zum Zulassungs- und Prüfungsrecht
The versions of statutes with relevance to teaching and learning provided on this page by the Department of Legal Affairs (in particular admission and selection regulations as well as subject and examination regulations) are primarily for information purposes. This means that all amendments subsequently agreed upon by the University Senate have been integrated into the respective text of the original statutes; in the case of the examination regulations for bachelor's and master's degree programmes, this generally relates to extracts of the respective examination regulations (framework examination regulations, subject-specific provisions, and appendices).
The greatest care has been taken in writing these versions. Nevertheless, it cannot be entirely ruled out that errors may have occurred. Consequently, it is solely the officially announced statutes and statute amendments that are legally binding, i.e. as published in the Amtlichen Bekanntmachungen der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg im Breisgau [de] or, up to the year 2000, in the official gazette of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts.
