The state examination degree programme in pharmacy focuses on the research, development and quality assurance of medicinal products – from their chemical basis to their application in humans. The programme is regulated nationwide by the licensing regulations. In addition to lectures and seminars, laboratory practice plays a central role – from chemical analysis to patient-oriented medicinal product application.
Â
The four-year degree programme is divided into a basic study period and an advanced study period, each taking two years. Successfully completing the basic studies leads to the First State Examination, completing the subsequent advanced study period leads to the Second State Examination.
During the basic study period, the relevant scientific and medical fundamentals are taught in the subjects of chemistry, biology, mathematics and physics, as well as in anatomy, physiology, pharmaceutics and pharmaceutical analytics.
In the subsequent advanced study programme, students focus on scientific subjects of pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutical biology, pharmaceutical technology and the medical subject of pharmacology. In addition, in the subject of clinical pharmacy, they deal with the optimisation of medication on and by patients.
In addition, students can choose a required elective subject from one of the five core areas of pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutical biology, pharmaceutical technology, pharmacology or clinical pharmacy.
The study programme is supplemented by an eight-week clinical internship and a twelve-month practical year.
The clinical internship („Famulatur“) takes place before the First State Examination and during the non-teaching period. At least four weeks have to be completed in a public pharmacy, while the remaining time can also be spent in a hospital pharmacy or the pharmaceutical industry, for example.
The twelve-month practical training is completed after passing the Second State Examination. At least six months be completed in a public pharmacy, while the remaining six months can also be completed in a hospital pharmacy, the pharmaceutical industry or a scientific institution, for example.
Upon successful completion of the pharmaceutical examination, graduates can apply for a licence to practise as a pharmacist.
Career perspectives
Completing the state examination programme and obtaining a licence to practise as a pharmacist opens up a wide range of career opportunities. Graduates are qualified for responisble positions in public pharmacies, hospital pharmacies and the pharmaceutical industry.

In addition, there are career opportunities in research and teaching, at health authorities, in drug approval or in quality management. Thanks to their broad scientific and medical training, pharmacists are sought-after experts in all areas where drugs are developed, tested, manufactured or used.

The versions of statutes with relevance to teaching and learning provided on this page by the Department of Legal Affairs (in particular admission and selection regulations as well as subject and examination regulations) are primarily for information purposes. This means that all amendments subsequently agreed upon by the University Senate have been integrated into the respective text of the original statutes; in the case of the examination regulations for bachelor's and master's degree programmes, this generally relates to extracts of the respective examination regulations (framework examination regulations, subject-specific provisions, and appendices).
The greatest care has been taken in writing these versions. Nevertheless, it cannot be entirely ruled out that errors may have occurred. Consequently, it is solely the officially announced statutes and statute amendments that are legally binding, i.e. as published in the Amtlichen Bekanntmachungen der Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg im Breisgau [de] or, up to the year 2000, in the official gazette of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts.
