Welcome to the Molecular and Nanophysics Group!

Our research is dedicated to the experimental investigation of atoms, molecules, clusters, and nanostructured materials. We use molecular beams, noble gas clusters, and helium nanodroplets to cool systems down to millikelvin temperatures. Our methods encompass laser spectroscopic techniques – from high-resolution frequency measurements to ultrashort timescales in the femtosecond (10⁻¹⁵s) and attosecond (10⁻¹⁸s) range. By detecting fluorescence, photoelectrons, and photoions, and employing coherent multidimensional methods with laser sources extending into the X-ray range, we unravel the complex interplay of structure, dynamics, and properties at the atomic and molecular levels.

Laser controls molecular rotation in superfluid helium

Together with colleagues from the University of British Columbia, Frank Stienkemeier has shown that molecules can be rotated precisely in superfluidhelium.
The method delivers new findings on the properties of superfluid.
