The Faculty of Biology is one of the strongest research faculties at the University of Freiburg. The Faculty promotes biological research and academic teaching in its breadth and at the highest international level and offers its researchers, teachers, students and science-supporting staff an open forum for science, dialog and encounters. The declared aim is to create working and teaching conditions that enable faculty members and students to develop their professional and personal potential in the best possible way. In order to be able to guarantee the very high quality of research and teaching in the future, the faculty has agreed on the following four points as its guiding principles:

Funding opportunities – Doctorate

Schlieben-Lange funding program for young female scientists with a childd
The Schlieben-Lange program is intended as an investment in the future for women with children, who would like to combine their scientific or artistic qualification with family responsibilities and, if necessary, professional tasks and would like to continue their scientific or artistic work or to work part-time.
The funding measure can be used to support a doctorate, habilitation or artistic qualification.
Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard Foundation
The call is addressed to outstanding aspiring scientists in subjects of the experimental natural sciences, who see their career as a scientist endangered because of the additional burdens of children. The CNV Foundation supports women scientists of all nationalities, who conduct research as doctoral students in German universities and research institutes. The applicant’s livelihood must be secured by a post or scholarship. It is also assumed that a full-time care of the child / children by a day care center or childminder is guaranteed.
The funding is 200 to 400 euros a month over a period of one year. The financial support should contribute to the relief in the household and in the child care, in order to gain time for the scientific work. These agents may e.g. for home-help, purchase of equipment such as a dishwasher or washing machine and for extra childcare (for example babysitting in the evenings or during travel to meetings).

Margarete von Wrangell Habilitation Program for Women
With the Margarete von Wrangell habilitation program, the state government specifically promotes women in science, above all to increase the number of female professors. Qualified female scientists should be encouraged to do a habilitation and given the necessary material.

Bertha Ottenstein Award
The Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg is committed to the continuous improvement of equal opportunities and results and therefore annually awards the Bertha Ottenstein Award. It recognizes specific initiatives in the field of women’s empowerment and gender equality work as well as outstanding academic achievements of women. The Bertha Ottenstein Prize is endowed with 5,000 EUR by the Rectorate of the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität.

Mentoring & Coaching

kite – mentoring program of the university
kite-mentoring is a mentoring program in English, initiated by BrainLinks-BrainTools and taking place at the University of Freiburg. The program has developed so successfully that it has been supported by other programs and institutions of the University of Freiburg, beyond the cluster. Today, participation in the program is open for female doctoral candidates and postdocs in physics, chemistry, pharmacy, mathematics, computer science, engineering, biology and medicine.
The kite-mentoring program is composed of three pillars: mentoring, training and networking, however, not all mentees have to necessarily attend events of all three pillars.
CORA Coaching Women for Research and Academia
The program is aimed at outstanding female scientists from the University of Freiburg with submitted dissertation, female postdocs, junior professors and group leaders from all faculties with the exception of medicine. Prerequisite for participation is the intention to qualify for a responsible position in science.

Day care center Blütengarten (formerly Biolino)

Day care center Blütengarten (formerly Biolino)
The day care center Blütengarten is a facility of the Faculty of Biology sponsored by the University of Freiburg. It enables employees of the Faculty of Biology to have their children looked after at the workplace close to the age of eight weeks until kindergarten admission.
