The German–Italian International Research Training Group (IRTG) 3132 “Analysis of Nonlinear PDE” funded by the German Research Foundation offers several funded PhD positions at the University of Freiburg.
The IRTG is a joint research program established by principal investigators from the University of Freiburg, Germany, and two leading Italian institutions: the Scuola Normale Superiore and the University of Pisa.
The IRTG focuses on cutting-edge analytical techniques in the mathematical study of nonlinear partial differential equations, bringing together expertise from both theoretical and applied mathematics. The research program addresses three primary areas: conformal variational problems involving curvature, shape optimization with spectral or non-local terms, and nonlinear as well as stochastic models in fluid and solid mechanics. These research directions encompass advanced methods in variational analysis, geometric analysis, spectral theory, and mathematical modeling of complex physical systems. Your Tasks
- Conduct research within a PhD project in one of the research areas of the IRTG
- Active participation in the structured course program
- At least six-month research stay at either Scuola Normale Superiore or University of Pisa
- Provide regular reports about your research progress

A completed Master’s degree (or equivalent) is required before starting a PhD position in Freiburg. A suitable level of English language proficiency is expected. Applicants should be prepared to give a short presentation of their degree work on short notice. The positions are for 0.75 E13 for 42 months.
Applications should include
- a letter of motivation outlining mathematical interests
- a CV, for example written in the Europass format, but without including a picture (information on nationality or work permit is also not necessary)
- contact information for two academic references who have agreed to provide recommendations on your behalf
- a transcript of records
- a copy of the bachelor’s or master’s thesis, if available
