The Institute of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is part of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Freiburg. It organises the biochemistry and molecular biology study programme for students of human medicine, dentistry and molecular medicine.
The institute consists of independent research groups that are networked through a common infrastructure (technical management, administration, workshop, photo laboratory) and events. The Institute is located, together with the Institute of Molecular Medicine and Cell Research, in the Centre for Biochemistry and Molecular Cell Research (ZBMZ) building.
Research
The Institute’s research focuses on the biological function of protein molecules (proteins) in cells. The research groups investigate, for example, how proteins are produced, modified, and transported, and how they interact with each other. Microorganisms (yeast cells and bacteria) and cell cultures are used for this purpose. Basic research is complemented by application-oriented medical and biotechnological collaborations with clinical institutes and industry.

The work at the Institute is partly financed by third-party funds, in particular by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) and the European Research Council (ERC). Current third-party funded projects include the Collaborative Research Centre Dynamic Organization of Cellular Protein Machineries (SFB 1381) and the Cluster of Excellence Centre for Integrative Biological Signalling Studies (CIBSS).
Open positions
