Research

Research is particularly innovative and successful when conducted on an interdisciplinary basis. Scientists at the Faculty of Medicine – University of Freiburg combine their findings from basic research with those from clinical research in a collaborative manner. They develop new therapies and apply these to patient care at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg.

The Faculty of Medicine supports scientists at an early career stage with structured excellence programs, research training groups and a wide range of training measures.

Research Funding

We aim to further advance research at Freiburg’s University Medicine in international competition. To this end, the Office of the Dean for Research supports scientists in submitting applications for internal, national, European and international research programs.

Two new research groups in Freiburg funded with €11,7 million

Starting on 1 July 2026, the DFG will fund the research group FOR 6051 „The Interstitium – a Key Determinant of Cardiac Function“, spokesperson Prof. Peter Kohl, with €5.7 million, and the research group FOR 5898 „AdBHealth“, spokesperson Prof. Sabrina Schreiner, with approximately €6 million for a period of four years.

Prof. Robert Zeiser Receives the ‘Landesforschungspreis’ 2026

The ‘Landesforschungspreis’, endowed with 100,000 €, will be awarded in 2026 to Prof. Robert Zeiser (Department of Medicine I). The award recognizes Prof. Zeiser for his groundbreaking work on immune regulation in cancer diseases, as well as for advancing allogeneic stem cell transplantation—a treatment that represents the last therapeutic option for certain types of cancer.
